Week 4

Posted by on 4:28 pm in Blog Post | 0 comments

This has been a difficult, and exciting week. We are finalists in the New Zealand Innovators awards for 2015. Stickmen Media received 3 nominations for the award some months back. It was very exciting to learn that we are finalists. This was our first week without scheduled mentors. What that means is, we had to schedule our own. By now we should be well down the path of appointing an advisory board. We have four members so far and we may yet appoint another. During the week we did have some group talks Monday we had our usual kickoff talk....

Thursday and Friday, Week 3

Posted by on 5:49 pm in Blog Post | 0 comments

Thursday was a full day in Lightning Lab. The first revelation was that Margaret and Michelle were the day’s clothing twins. After the embarrassment there was a presentation by Chris Twiss from NZVIF. He talked about the investment that many of us are interested in. He covered a lot of ground, including: The difference between Angels, VC’s and private equity in terms of the size of deals; The players in seed investment, and the Seed Co-investment Fund; What the deals look like; and Being investable. He also pushed their website as...

Wednesday Week 3

Posted by on 6:52 pm in Blog Post | 0 comments

My apologies for skipping two days. It is not an easy task keeping up with these summaries while immersed in the turmoil of Lightning lab. While Monday we had no mentor meetings it was a chance to catch up with other tasks. We scheduled some appointments and caught up with our contacts at Callaghan. The key appointment to make was with a representative of a district health board. On Tuesday our first meeting was with Dave Tinkler from Howard and Company. That was very useful meeting. Dave is in our space, having a great deal of knowledge of...

Friday, Week 2

The end of another week, and its flown by. I am beginning to appreciate how short 12 weeks will be. Today we met up with Nicolás Erdödy, Ben Kepes, Brett Holland and Anake Goodall. In all cases it was a challenge, since we have had to change our pitch based on the elimination of some assumptions that we had last week. Ben was very helpful, suggesting a M&A person for our advisory board. Nicolás tore my pitch apart, but helped to rebuild it shorter and sharper. Brett Holland had some great insight into JVs with wheelchair manufactures. He...

Thursday, Week 2

Our first product is a virtual reality wheelchair simulation that can help tetraplegics transition from patient, to the reality of their new lives. Its a worthy project, and everyone wants it to succeed but it isn’t quite so easy to see the ‘business’ in the project.  Teasing out the business is a matter of finding out the pain points for everyone involved in patients journey and seeing how , or if,  our product solves their problem. Our first meeting was with Dave Moskovitz. I like getting the investor mentors’ points...

Wednesday, Week 2

Today has been fascinating. Our first meeting was with Karl Varley. He knew a lot about us and seemed very interested in seeing us pursue a top down approach to getting to our market, reaching out to ministers first. One of the most interesting things about the mentoring program is the diversity of opinion and advice. Each mentor seems to have thought about the marketing in a different way. Our second meeting with Grant Welles started us thinking about diversifying our product offering around our core product, and identifying opportunities...

Tuesday, Week 2 of Lightning Lab

Posted by on 9:32 am in Blog Post | 0 comments

It was another roller coaster of a day on Tuesday. We met with 4 mentors as we continued product validation journey for the Virtual Reality Wheelchair Trainer. Michelle Sharp CEO of Kilmarnock Enterprises was our first mentor of the day. We had met her before, at the Champion Canterbury Finalists evening. They have previously won two successive ACC Workplace Safety Awards and are finalists again this year. She turned out to be incredibly helpful, having a very good relationship with ACC. Greg Williamson gave us the best piece of marketing...

Monday, Week Two in Lightning Lab

Posted by on 5:49 pm in Blog Post | 0 comments

The start of the second week of lightning lab and it seems that we need to speed up our validation processes. Most groups here will be speaking to 10 potential customers a week to validate their products (or prototypes). We will have to think a little differently since our prototype will be validated in clinical trials over a longer period than lightning lab. Dan Khan gave us a good perspective on how to make the best use of our time here so we will focus more on the business case. The mentors are a feature of month one, and we spend a lot of...

Week One in Lightning Lab

Posted by on 7:30 pm in Blog Post | 0 comments

Its been an intense week. We set up our company, set up emails, accounts, this website, financials. We started doing market research and validation and we had some very interesting meetings with lightning lab mentors. I am shattered so I am off home for dinner and sleep....

MTech Games in Lightning Lab!

Posted by on 4:29 am in Blog Post | 2 comments

MTech Games is a company under construction. Formed out of Stickmen Media Limited MTech Games will be commercializing software developed in a collaboration with Callaghan Technologies. The startup has been accepted into 2015 Lightning Lab business accelerator in Christchurch New Zealand. In the next 12 weeks we hope to develop this startup into a fully functioning company with a clear strategy to commercialize its current software (more about that later) and develop new software. We are particularly interested in developing solutions around...
